Gwen Stefani (Case Study)

Client: Gwen Stefani

Location: Traveling Show

Service: Musical Stage Set

Gwen Stefani’s music ranges from pop to rock, R&B, ska, and country. With her own fashion line, her wide range of music simultaneously translates to her wardrobe, especially on stage.

Knowing that the singer does not shy away from spectacle, it became pertinent to develop a dynamic stage set that acts as a supporting actor that supplements her performances.

Inspiration Board

Taking inspiration from the Ziegfeld Follies, the resulting stage set uses architecture as a promenade and utilizes repeating stair elements that can be used in a variety of ways.

By manipulating the height and configuration of the stair elements, the singer could engage and interact with the stage in numerous ways— it can be used as a backdrop or something that can be climbed, or something that could be inhabited.

The stair modules can serve as light boxes, replaced with antiqued mirror, or even have graphics projected on the surface.

The movable elements also ensure that everyone in the audience has a unique experience, no matter where they are sitting within the theater.

The stage envelope is a metal coil mesh curtain that integrates with the stage lighting. It can be manipulated around and above the stage with a pulley system to create soft silhouettes and movement to contrast with the sharp geometric shapes of the moving stage.

Together, the stage and the curtains create a playful, dynamic, set that creates visual interest from all angles.
